Re: Uber cabs
In theory I think it's cos it's so hard to get a return fare (there's traditionally fuck all in terms of night life or whatever) but in practise I've never really had any aggro in getting to/from/around south London after dark.

Why is it that black cabs "won't go south of the river at this time of night" anyway?

Why Fucking not?

Re: Uber cabs
Obviously a little off topic, but from what I gather this uber app is basically a legalised versions of what all the african lads used to do outside the clubs in London in the early hours of the morning...

Re: Uber cabs
Left England 8 years ago and remember in around 2006 being in Fabric with my mates, few of us live in Stanford, one other Basildon. Come out at 5am and decided to get a black man cab, the fella was from Sierra Leone, nice bloke actually - I wasn't keen on ripping him off but the other lads over ruled. Told him we were on the A13, he quoted £40, obviously snapped it up - 5 lads squeezed into a volvo getting home from Farrington for £40! Questions started being asked around Romford but the bloke was obviously too scared to pipe up, he definitely was pleased about the two drops either - firstly in Basildon and then in Stanford, but he never asked for another penny - we gave him 50 notes in the end.

As I was in the front I was having a chat with him, and one specific quote I'll always remember from him: "ahh chafford hundred! so beautiful! my friends and family dream of living here one day"

I was a bit taken aback, then he said something similar about Grays...he was a good bloke, working for his wife and kids and hoping to get his parents over. No different to any of us. Shouldn't surprise me to see the change in the population of Thurrock when I return, though inevitably it still does.

Charley

Before Livingstone put the black cabs fares up they would repeatedly refuse to take me south of the river. Funnily enough after the rates went up they never refused and now they bite my hand off for the fare. One thing though If the black cabs went it would be bad for our branding as a city with tourists.

i want that one, once they have been flagged down and stop, unless it's over 6 miles or outside the licensing boundary areas they have to take you.

Re: Uber cabs
Fantastic service which provides the customer with real choice and value.

I live right by the TFL offices and black cab depot and regularly see the protests. I love the way they pretend it's about customer safety when in reality they're simply trying to protect their over inflated income.

Times change, technology changes. It's not just about the price (although that is certainly a big factor), I want to be able to pay quickly and easily, play my own music, see a transparent breakdown of my journey etc.

As admirable as completing the knowledge is, it's simply not relevant anymore. Luddites who don't keep up with the times will end up being left behind which is what is happening to the black taxi trade.

I don't like uber, but at least they take you south of the river after midnight.

Black cabbies are real cunts

The faketaxi guys are gonna find it much harder to get laid now.

Maybe they'll switch to Uber.

Re: Uber cabs
Uber is decent. Much better and cheaper for getting out of London.

My mates paid TWICE what I paid the other week to get home, same time, same journey I used Uber though.

Re: Uber cabs
I use Uber all the time in Houston and they provide a great service. The drivers are screened before being employed and the cars are always relatively new and clean. No money changes hands as you register your credit card. After the journey, you get sent details of the cost and the route taken. I've queried the route a couple of times and been reimbursed within about 10 mins of submitting my query. The app asks you to rate the driver and It's important to do this as the driver also rates you as a passenger! Your rating is shown to the potential driver who can defer not to take you if you have a low rating. A really low rating can get you banned.

Brilliant service, beats a black cab any day of the week on price, service, convenience.

Would recommend it to everybody.

Re: Uber cabs
Got to be said if cab drivers were charming helpful and full of the joys of spring, they wouldn't have a problem with ANY competition, instead they think the world owes them a living, they at best are grumpy at worst bloody rude and do nothing but moan.

Uber is not the problem they are the solution.

Re: Uber cabs
Got a couple of mates who are black cab drivers and can see their point of ire, partly.

However, as a consumer I want to be able to find myself the cheapest/quickest means to travel.

It is ideal when you are not in the City of London but out on the fringes and evening has well drawn in.

Instead of waiting 20/30 mins for a black cab to pass, or wander aimlessly hoping to grab one, I check the app, see how long I have, see how much it will cost, and then order another pint in while I wait.

Never had a problem with them. They get a fare without hassle and who wont run on them and I get a cheaper ride back.

Re: Uber cabs
The Knowledge is archaic. SatNav has made it obsolete but black cab drivers will still try to use it as some sort of justification of their prices and general attitude.

I agree Uber drivers should be subject to regulation to make sure they're insured and not on a register, as should mini-cab drivers etc. but other than that why shouldn't black cab drivers face the same sort of competition that every other business does?

Who knows, they might even be forced to up their game and stop taking the piss?

Re: Uber cabs
Had to go down to Abbey Wood today. Got in a minicab who put our destination (all of a couple of miles) in his sat nav. The sat nav took us right, right, right and right to our destination. The cab office we'd started at. Had to direct him using the map on my phone. Local knowledge...

Lee Trundle 6:17 Wed Jul 8
Re: Uber cabs
"Cabbies do the Knowledge for a couple of years are regulated..."

That's great. But what about outside of London? The only difference between a regular minicab driver and an uber cab is the price where I'm from.
